Architect Bentley Tibbs designed this quiet contemporary gem, which is well sited on 1.025 acres in North Dallas. Protected by a privacy berm of burford hollies, the house forms a U lined with walls of glass overlooking a rear courtyard. Beyond, a negative edge swimming pool is resort-worthy, with a tanning ledge and a spa. Sweeping green space surrounds the front and back of the home, which nestles under towering trees.
The modernist Tibbs, who trained under Frank Welch, blurred indoor/outdoor distinctions by employing the same rough cedar ceilings as well as integrally stained concrete floors inside and out. A unique, edgy contemporary style is achieved by combining a metallic-glazed, Roman-brick exterior with rough-hewn wood support columns. Industrial hardware braces affix the columns to the ceiling of the home’s numerous covered terraces, adding an industrial note.
Leading to the entry is a calming space; an Asian courtyard with a fountain, a floor of dwarf bamboo and a precise patch of horsetail grass. The massive, pivoting front door is wrapped in zinc.
Inside, the entry expands to an open space, including a sitting area and a dining room with almost seamless glass walls that overlook the front courtyard. White marble surfaces and mahogany cabinets continue from the dining room to the open gourmet kitchen beyond, with stainless appliances that include a commercial Wolf range. Six-inch plank hardwood floors, cabinets of wood and translucent glass, and a massive center island with white marble and decorative Artemide Nur lights create intriguing surfaces and textures. A mud room from the garage and an ample breakfast area are also off of the kitchen.
A generous bar area (with a 100-bottle wine refrigerator) connects the kitchen with the west wing: a large vaulted family room with two walls of glass that open to the rear covered walkway and covered outdoor living area. This roomy outdoor living/dining room includes a stacked-stone fireplace and a separate grill area. Taken together, these indoor/outdoor living areas provide the perfect setting for large family gatherings or parties. A serene guest room and bath are off of the den.
The east wing, part of which is concealed behind a floating wall of mahogany, comprises two studies (his and hers), two bedrooms connected by a playroom or living space. To the east of the rear courtyard and extending along the covered walkway is the spacious Master bedroom, boasting three exposures. The spa-like master bath offers marble surfaces on floating mahogany cabinets.
To the west of the swimming pool is a cabana with a living area and a bath. Additional amenities include 18 SEER Carrier Infinity HVAC units and a utility room with room for two sets of washer/dryers.
